Heidi Heitkamp Scandal

On behalf of *some* of the names listed in Heitkamp’s recent campaign -
On October 13th 2018, you saw our names in the paper.

128 women's full names were listed under the category of “survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or rape”. Some were asked to sign the letter as supporters of survivors of domestic violence, others were not asked permission of any kind. Not all of these women agreed to their personal information being used as campaign propaganda.

Heidi Heitkamp’s political agenda has interfered with, or downright ruined, some of our lives. Survivors of assault who had taken care to avoid the subject were suddenly bombarded by questions asking them to explain to their loved ones why their name appeared on this list. Women who have never been assaulted spent the day reassuring loved ones of their safety. Those affected have been unsettled by the knowledge that our full names and locations have been publicly announced, particularly after it has reached national news.

This false advertisement broke basic confidentiality, and Marsy’s Law. Marsy’s Law clearly states in Article 1, Section 25 of North Dakota’s Declaration of Rights: “[Victims have] the right to prevent disclosure of information or records that could be used to locate or harass the victim…”

Those of us affected had our privacy violated on this day, and we deserve closure. In order to receive the closure we need, we are searching for a lawyer who will take our case. We need our own voice. Together, the women wrongly listed on Heitkamp’s advertisement are searching for competent legal refuge.
