Help Alex Beat MS with Chemo/HSCT

Donation protected
We have a chance to change Alex’s future for the better, thanks to all of our amazing friends and family who are willing to pull out all the stops. They will be running events, racing, trekking, climbing and in some cases jumping out of a plane all to give Alex the chance to live his life like you and me.

It will be as a direct result of sponsorship and donations given to all these amazing people doing these great acts, that Alex will be able to undergo a groundbreaking treatment to halt his Multiple Sclerosis and be without the fear of it robbing him of his quality of life.

Anyone who knows my Alex will know that he’s the most awe-inspiring husband. He struggles on a daily basis since being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). He is a fantastic father to our two beautiful children, but since diagnosis, he has been plagued with the knowledge that MS is slowly taking hold of his body and his life.

Alex’s health has deteriorated over the years but most significantly when he had a major relapse in 2013 leaving him with further disability after losing control of his legs.

We call this the invisible disease because, apart from needing a stick to walk, he looks fine on the outside however on the inside Alex’s immune system is attacking his central nervous system, causing multiple relapses with scarring (sclerosis) in his brain and spinal column!

He is challenged on a daily basis with fatigue and anxiety as well as daily nerve and joint pain, muscle spasms, balance issues, weakness and loss of stamina in his legs.

Alex manages to hide his fears due to his ‘can-do’ attitude and overwhelming positivity as well as a strict exercise and physio regime. He is a proud man, reluctant to ask for help. His upbeat attitude has been the driving force that has helped him to cope so far. It’s this wonderful attitude that I want to preserve and help Alex to continue to be the independent go-getter that he is.

Since Alex was first diagnosed, we have researched numerous treatments and disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) to reduce the onslaught of MS. Some have helped reduce the frequency of relapses, but none will ‘halt’ or even improve the damage that has already been done…

...That is UNTIL NOW!

Alex has chosen to go to Russia for life-changing stem cell treatment, called HSCT (Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant), at the National Pirogov Medical Centre in Moscow, under Dr Denis Federenko, who has successfully treated hundreds of MS sufferers.

Put simply; the idea is to reboot his system using a combination of harvesting his stem cells, high dose chemotherapy to kill off his existing faulty immune system and then re-infusing his stem cells to help him rebuild a brand new immune system free of any memory of MS. This is the only medical procedure currently available to Alex that has halted MS progression for the majority (80-95%) undertaking it in a similar condition to Alex.

It is recommended to have HSCT sooner rather than later before more damage occurs and Alex becomes worse.

Which is why we need your help now! The treatment is designed to stop MS in its tracks permanently. Any healing of damage already done is a bonus and not guaranteed. However, many patients receive amazing improvements in their current condition.

HSCT treatment is available on the NHS for a few patients that meet the strict criteria (unfortunately Alex doesn't meet the criteria)  and you can pay privately to have HSCT in the UK but it is much more costly than in other places and is still relatively new in its practice in this country.

Alex has applied to the Moscow HSCT Centre for three main reasons:
1. Over 1000 transplants have been successfully carried out whereas in the UK it’s around 100 transplants
2. The reviews of care and results at the Russia HSCT are second-to-none
3. The cost is around half of that in the UK

Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Rose, Alex's wife xxx
