I just finished grad school and have my Master's in Occupational Therapy. I have traveled to Central America 4x in the last 7 years and it's been my dream to return for longer once I had my degree. Well, now is the time!
I have taken a 6-month position as a full-time volunteer occupational therapist at a unique special needs school in Nicaragua! I go in January! It is a non-profit, Christian based school called Tesoros de Dios , meaning treasures of God! It has programs for babies through young adults with a variety of physical and emotional needs (autism, cerebral palsy, birth defects, spina bifida, Downs, and developmental delays). I visited this school 4 years ago for a week and was so impressed by its services.
(trip to Tesoros de Dios in Jan 2015, with a beautiful young teen receiving palliative care)
Their programs include:
-early intervention
-skill development for children not cognitively ready for school
-special education curriculum
-autism program
-transition program - teaching life skills to young adults
-palliative care - maintaining skills and quality of life in children with severe disabilities
-physical therapy
Their services include:
-physical therapy
-speech therapy
-occupational therapy
-horse therapy
-education
-vocational services
-counseling
-nutrition and feeding technique training
-home treatment
-family support
-transportation to and from Tesoros de Dios
Join me in this adventure! :)
This trip is self-funded. Thank you so much in advance! Thank you for reading this and considering supporting my dream!
To better understand what occupational therapy is, who I am, and what I'll be doing, visit my BLOG! (click here ) I will continue blogging as internet permits during the adventure!
Your support makes a difference in my life as well as the children, families, staff, and community I will serve. Without your generosity, this would not be possible. So vicariously, you are changing lives, by opening doors for a dream to become a reality!
(trip to Tesoros de Dios, Jan 2015, sibling of boy with disabilities)
Muchas gracias!!
