Help Angela Write in Portugal!

The end of last year lead me to reflect on the commitments I had made in my life — what was filling my time and why I made the choices to fill my time in those ways. This led to me being really honest with myself about the fact that many of my commitments were made out of obligation and there is a lot more space in my life to make commitments based on what gives me joy and helps me experience the freedom I want. My life feels like it’s at a crossroads, and this commitment to myself needs to be done. While I made steps toward deepening my writing practice last year, I want to take it further.

At the start of 2019, I resolved to explore my writing, connect with writers who I value, connect with writers who I  want to build community with. I applied to every writing opportunity, program, and residency within my reach. As I was connecting with folks, one person shared the Disquiet International Literary Program with me and I dug through my writing and submitted poems as part of my application. My writing connected and they said yes to me. I want to say yes back and follow through with this opportunity, but I cannot do this on my own.

Through this opportunity, I’m hoping to give myself the time and space to think and determine my relationship with writing. I’m looking forward to the space to explore different genres of writing and settle more comfortably into to my voice. This will be my first time experiencing workshop in this way and I’m looking forward to the workshop setting as a way to build my skills and confidence as a writer.

There are a variety of amazing workshops that will take us through understanding the ways our bodies are represented in text, the parameters of creative nonfiction, and the importance of spontaneity and place as inspiration. There are amazing faculty and writers leading these workshops, including Erica Dawson and Noy Holland. By embarking on this journey, I hope to expand my writing network, and experience the communal encouragement and motivation that is synonymous and workshop settings. More information on the program and accompanying residency can be found here: http://disquietinternational.org/the-program/.
