Help Archie Keep Hough Bakery Alive

Donation protected

Hough Bakeries, one of Cleveland’s finest food treasures, was founded over 115 years ago in 1903 by Lionel Archibald Pile. It became the largest retail bakery of its kind in Ohio and one of the largest in the country. Unfortunately, Hough fIled for bankruptcy and ultimately closed in 1992.

My name is Archie Lee Garner and I worked at Hough Bakeries for 25 years. I began my career at Hough in the sanitation department and later transitioned into bakery production where I gained my initial baking experience. I was eventually promoted to Head Baker in Hough’s Catering Divison. It was always my dream to own my own bakery.  With the help of my family, I opened Archie's Lakeshore Bakery in 1994 located at 14906 Lakeshore Blvd. in Cleveland, Ohio.

I continue to produce favorites like the Hough white cake with white buttercream icing, butter cookies, fudge icing, chocolate cake, Hungarian delights, lemon coconut cake , the famous hot cross buns, cinnamon raisin bread, all butter loaves and butter rings, coconut bars,Neapolitan cake, petit fours, surprise cupcakes, daffodil cakes, wedding cakes and many more goodies that cannot be found elsewhere with the great quality that the Pile family maintained for generations. In order to keep this great tradition of scratch baking alive and thriving we need your help.

Our lease has recently expired and we’re being forced to move. Fortunately, we’ve found a prospective location. However, we will incur a number of expenses during the relocation process.  Your donations will be used to purchase and replace outdated equipment which belongs to current establishment and cannot be moved to our new location. All funds will go directly towards the following:

Industrial Oven
Mixer
Freezer unit
Cooler unit
Cookie depositor
Dough sheeter
Dough divider rounder
Work benches
Miscellaneous supplies
Moving expenses
Build-out costs
Operational expenses
Delivery vehicle

Along with preserving the Hough legacy, our purpose and desire is to help non-violent offenders by teaching them a valuable artform and a trade. This will allow them to experience a sense of purpose and self worth which is fundamental to our communities. Providing this opportunity could deter them from re-entering the criminal justice system. This opportunity will also serve our youth of today who may have little or no hope. Teaching our youth and non-violent offenders entrepreneurial skills will serve as a tool for helping them overcome challenges they often face.

If you are inspired by our story and would like to impact the successful future of the bakery, please consider donating. 100% of your donations will go towards keeping Hough Bakery traditions alive and our commitment to helping others to succeed in life.
