Hi! My name is Iana and I'm helping my friend Dilara raise money to go to NYFF. Due to complications with connecting Dilara's bank account to GoFundMe, I've offered to start a campaign in her place. Additionally, as I live in the UK, the currency is in pounds but the exchange rate checks out for Dilara's goal of $800. Below is Dilara's story in her words:
Hello! My name is Dilara, I'm an aspiring film critic from Turkey and I need your help to go to New York Film Festival.
I've planned to go to the festival for months and saved up for it but due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to use that money for something else.
Here's what happened: On 10th of September I was supposed to move from Turkey to Seattle to start my MFA in Creative Writing at University of Washington. First I was going to fly to Germany then take my connecting flight to Seattle. Unfortunately at the airport, the airline didn’t let me (and several others) on the flight to Germany because we didn’t have a Schengen visa (for EU countries). All of us who were rejected were sure - and correct - that we didn't need any, we had proof that transit flights don't require a visa since we won't enter the country and that a valid US visa is enough for transit flights. But the airline refused to take us on, and on top of that they refused to give us our money back claiming it was our fault. Because of this I had to use the money I saved for NYFF to buy a new plane ticket to Seattle.
So what am I going to do with this $800? $450 will go towards flights to NY and back - I'll go between 17th-25th when most press screenings take place. The remaining $350 will go towards transportation to/from airport and food expenses for the 9 days I'll be at the festival. Luckily, I have a friend who's letting me crash on her couch and she lives very close to Lincoln Center, so I don't need any money for accommodation. I have press accreditation already and don't need to buy any tickets.
