Help get Lance new lungs!!

Lance was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a baby, he has been battling this illness for his whole life. While growing up Lance lead a mostly normal childhood, of course he had his daily medications and chest physio treatments to keep him as healthy as possible. Throughout his childhood Lance had only minor bumps in the road with his cystic fibrosis. These minor bumps continued into his teenage years and young adulthood, his lung function remained strong and steady through it all. A couple of years ago Lance’s health declined, he was in and out of the hospital for IV antibiotics multiple times in a year. When Lance’s lung function had significantly decreased and it was time to start talking about lung transplant something amazing happened, bit by bit Lance regained his lung function and put on weight. He was the healthiest he had been in a long time, his doctors were amazed. Lance continued to get stronger and stronger until the unthinkable happened. On New Year’s Day of 2018 Lance started developing symptoms of influenza despite getting his flu shot and doing his best to protect himself. Lance ended up being admitted to the hospital on January 8th. What we all thought would be a routine in and out like it normally was would quickly turn out to be the worst and scariest time of Lance’s and his family’s life.

Lance fought for almost a week on his own until it was clear that his lungs and body needed help. He was tired and his body needed to rest. The doctors at health science Center put Lance on a ventilator and in a medically induced coma. For weeks Lance’s wife Caitlin, mother Terry, father Rick, sister Amber and the rest of his family sat at his bedside. Finally the time came to wake Lance up. It was difficult and full of set backs. Lance eventually came off the ventilator but this only lasted a short time as he had contracted a multi drug resistant pneumonia and once again he needed to be put on the ventilator and back into a medically induced coma. Lance’s health continued to decline faster and faster to the point where he entered acute renal failure and was running out of antibiotics that could fight his infection among many other complications. In a last ditch attempt to save Lance’s life he was put on echmo and transferred to the Asper Center at St. Boniface hospital. His family spent many sleepless nights and days at his bedside not knowing if these were their last moments with him. Then slowly little by little Lance started to improve. He was eventually taken off the echmo and transferred to the regular icu. There again Lance and his family were faced with another road block. They were told by multiple doctors that Lance wouldn’t get better and that they should expect the worst, that a lung transplant was completely out of the question. Despite everything they were told they couldn’t give up on him, they wouldn’t give up on him. Once again bit by bit Lance’s condition improved. His acute renal failure resolved, he got some of his strength back and his lung function improved enough that he was able to come off the ventilator. Lance continued to improve and proved all the doctors wrong.  As quickly as possible the work and tests needed to be put on the transplant list were completed.

On May 7th/2018 Lance was officially accepted on to the lung transplant list. Lance and his family need your help. There are many cost associated with lung transplant. The drugs that Lance will require for the rest of his life, The medical equipment that is required for Lance to safely monitor his health daily forever. The equipment that may be needed to make Lance and Caitlin’s house safe and easier to navigate for Lance and of course the cost associated with Lance having his support system near him when the time comes to go to Edmonton for his lung transplant.

Lance has proven time and time again how much fighting spirit and will to live he has. If Lance’s story has touched you in anyway please consider donating to this cause. Lance wants nothing more then to get healthy and go home to his loving wife Caitlin and their fur babies Meeka and Mercedes. Let’s get Lance new lungs and fight for him to have the life that he wants and deserves.
