Gilbert's Recovery
Donation protected
UPDATE:
With everyone's prayers and generous donations I was able to get home to Sydney to be with my family and enter the next stage of my recovery at the Royal Rehab Center! I would not have been able to make it this far without the encouragement from each and every one of you. I can't express enough what it means to me to be with my family back in Australia and I have each of you to thank.
Being in a more stable condition I was able to secure a flight home on a commercial flight and get home with the assistance of my Uncle Charlie and a nurse. Any money left over from the cost of the flight will go towards my recover at home here in Sydney.

On the first beautiful morning of a family reunion, after traveling nearly 10,000 miles from Sydney, Australia to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Gilbert walked out on a dock toward his family playing catch in Pamlico Sound. Caught up in the fun of the moment, Gilbert dove into the Sound to join them and his world changed forever. His spine shattered at his C5 vertebra. He was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he was rushed into the first of many surgeries, with more to come. Tragically, Gilbert is now quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chest down and unable to use his hands, which makes his goal of returning home particularly complicated and expensive.
Gilbert's health insurance does not extend benefits to care in the United States. He desperately needs to return home, not only for medical treatment which will be covered in Australia, but to be near his family. Medical air transportation costs to Sydney alone are $200,000. Without these funds, Gilbert is at risk of being transferred to a nursing home in the U.S. where he will not receive the care and intense rehabilitation he needs during this critical time.
This heartbreaking accident could not have happened to a more caring and generous man. He is the provider for his family, which includes his mother and sister (both with chronic illnesses) and father.
Please help us to get Gilbert home to Australia as soon as possible. Gil's determination is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit as he remains positive on fighting for his recovery. All funds raised through this GoFundMe effort will go directly towards Gilbert's return home and his extensive medical recovery costs. We, his family, appreciate any support you give to Gilbert more than we can say.
