Help Hans Heal: Medical & Living Expenses
Donation protected
This Downtown Phoenix super hero needs our help. Hans Hughes, a beloved member of the DTPHX community, is in critical condition after being hit by a drunk driver while riding his bike home from work on Friday, August 20, 2021.
UPDATES
9/22 — Spread the word for Hans’ candlelight vigil for this Saturday, September 25 @ 6pm. Historic Heritage Square under the Lath Pavillion. Address: 113 N 6th St. Phoenix, AZ
9/21 — We lost our beloved friend. Hans Alden Hughes, Feb. 22,1978 – Sept. 21, 2021. Services to be announced.
9/21 — Heavy news: Our precious Hans’ health has rapidly declined since Saturday 9/18 when Hans’ heart stopped and the medical team spent 20+ minutes getting it going again. Things were looking so positive a week ago and there was talk of moving him to a skilled nursing/rehab facility. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see things take a sudden turn for the worse. Thank you for your patience, love and support. -Lauren
9/6 — AMAZING NEWS! Hans is AWAKE, responsive and OFF the ventilator!!! Thank you to everyone who has donated. Can you help us cross the finish line to get to $40k? Love, Team #HelpHansHeal
8/26/21 — Today Hans goes into surgery to stabilize his right chest cavity — his entire right rib cage was shattered and he can’t breathe on his own as a result. Please send all your positive vibes ams prayers.
8/23/21 — Hans received a blood transfusion today, and is otherwise in stable condition.
Hans sustained injuries to his head, face and chest and is being kept under sedation to help his body rest and settle down. Needless to say, Hans has a long road to recovery ahead.
He has given his heart and soul to the community for the past 10+ years as a Downtown Phoenix Ambassador — we all know he truly embodies this title whether he’s wearing the orange shirt or not.
The love and commitment Hans has for his family, friends, colleagues and neighbors run deep, and now it’s time for his community to come together for him.
Keep in mind, he may need help with transportation, meals, basic house keeping and legal fees.
Please give generously, whatever is within your budget, and share this far and wide.

A note from Hana Kuykendall, Hans’ sister:
“My family is moved and deeply touched by the love, connections and support received. The Hughes family are wanderers and have spread ourselves across this country.
As his sister I would greatly appreciate help with these future items from the amazing community he has built around himself. Thank you is such a small saying for the immense gratitude we feel.
Take care and much Love from the Hughes Family.”
