I’m Alex Gabriel, blogger and sometimes other things. I write regularly, mostly on Medium , and my posts—on politics, art, abuse, mental illness, film and TV, religion, writing, queer identity — are listed there.
For the last eighteen months, I’ve been without a place to live. Staying on floors and sofas has had ups and downs, and while I’ve since done some of my best writing—including about homelessness—I want to get housed in the next six months.
My income writing is enough to cover ongoing living costs—and, eventually, rent—but not the costs of tenancy applications or deposits. Because I’m self-employed, getting housed also means I need to show three months of healthy bank statements, which I can’t do while living hand-to-mouth.
Between April and the summer, I’ll be hostelling while writing a regular series . The funds I’m looking to raise here will sit mostly untouched until that time, when they’ll go toward the overheads involved in finding a place to live—paperwork, deposit, furnishings, travel, etc.
This fundraiser will stay live for the next few months and be linked at the bottom of my posts. If you want to help out, it’s greatly appreciated—this isn’t a situation I can climb out of any time soon otherwise. Sharing this page (or any post of mine that has a link) is just as good a way to help—it means a great deal, and I’ll do my best to thank every donor personally.
