Help Jake Go to Graduate School

Hey everyone! I just graduated from the University of Mississippi with a BS in Chemistry (Biochemistry track) and will be attending Yale in the fall for a combined PhD program in biological and biomedical sciences. I'm so thankful for this opportunity to continue my education, but moving to Connecticut is very expensive and creates a real economic barrier for me to pursue my education. Some expenses I'm facing are a security deposit equal to two months rent, July and August rent with no real source of income, and tons of moving fees like Uhauls, gas, etc. I would really appreciate any contribution because it will help me achieve my dream of doing research which will hopefully have a positive impact on society!

In undergraduate I was really involved on and off campus. I worked for the Daily Mississippian as an editorial cartoonist. I'm also a member of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.  I plan to also pursue a career in editorial cartooning along with my scientific work. You can see my AAEC profile here .

I also was on the exec board for three years and president for a semester of an organization Rebels Against Sexual Assault. Our organization held events to raise awareness of sexual assault, gave presentations on consent and how to support survivors of sexual assault, and helped improve the safety of our campus. As a survivor of sexual assault myself, doing this work and sharing my story  has been incredibly fulfilling, healing, and impactful. I plan to continue this activism work along with my studies when I move to New Haven because I believe ending sexual assault is something everyone can agree on. 

I did research in three labs during my time at the University of Mississippi. I worked in a nanoscience lab under Dr. Dass, a fungi and algae lab under Dr. Hom, and a cancer lab under Dr. Zhou. My undergraduate thesis was on the effects of lovastatin and CoQ10 on metastatic breast cancer which you can read here . I plan on continuing research related to human health. I'm interested in cancers, retroviruses, and drug discovery. At Yale, I will have amazing facilities to pursue these kinds of research, so your support will mean the world to me.
