Thank you for reading this petition. My name is Margarita and I am writing to request help from the community following the deportation of my husband. My husband and some coworkers took a wrong turn while looking for work in Michigan, and were detained by ICE. After signing a voluntary order of departure, he was deported to our home country. My husband was our primary breadwinner, and I am now the sole supporter for myself and my 12-year-old daughter. Any assistance to cover rent and bills following this traumatic time would be much appreciated.

Here is our story:

Until December, my husband, 12-year-old daughter and I had lived in Chicago’s multi-ethnic Albany Park neighborhood for more than 12 years. My husband,a hard-working man who liked to be with his family, worked as a roofer. For us it was always a pleasure to spend Sunday together and share food after going to church.

Everything changed on December 17, 2018. He was going to build a roof with more partners in a town near Detroit, Michigan. One of his companions who was driving the truck where several workers were driving had a wrong turn and they were stopped by the police. Due to his undocumented immigrant status he was sent to a detention center in Port Huron, Michigan, where he was forced to wait through the government closure. With no clear sign he would soon be released, my husband decided to sign his voluntary departure.

He was our only source of income. I have lived since December on our few savings, but rent and other bills don’t wait. The financial costs are on top of our emotional distress - our daughter is very depressed and I fear that this affects her grades. I have a job just one day cleaning a house and this income does not cover what I have to pay in the next few weeks.

For this I ask for help through this platform to cover the immediate expenses. Your help will be very valuable and appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
