Help me "Tell Her Story"

Have you ever felt called into something you didn't quite understand, but knew that you were meant to do? Maybe you didn't know exactly how, but no matter how hard you tried to push it away, the calling kept  knocking? 

That has happened to me several times now. The second time it occurred when I was preparing to write my dissertation for my doctoral degree, and I heard a voice whisper to me, "Tell My Story."  "Who me?"  I responded. "Yes, You. Tell my story." The voice I experienced calling to me was that of Mary Magdalene.

It is a very interesting experience, being called by a spiritual icon. At first there is a strong sense of denial. "Really, YOU are calling ME?"  An experience like this can shake you to the very core of who you are. Our notions of "hearing voices" aren't necessarily positive ones. 

I first heard her call when I was a young girl, sitting in a pew at our local Catholic Church during the Lenten season. At that time I knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the stories I had been told about Mary Magdalene simply were not true. 

She called me a second time during my doctoral dissertation process. At the time of my research not a lot had been written about her. Most people still held onto the story of her being a prostitute. (Not true by the way!)  Then, one year into my process, The DaVinci Code hit the stands and her popularity began to soar. I discovered, that historically her popularity seems to rise when women's voices are needed in the world.

Eventually I completed my dissertation (a four year process) and was awarded my Doctorate in Psychology.  I also learned that there were others feeling called by her. Her presence is definitely rising. People kept asking me if I was going to turn my research into a book. I have finally said yes. 

Mary Magdalene's message is very relevant to the world today. She was a #MeToo in that her story was maligned, and she carried that story for over 2,000 years.  Ms. Magdalene teaches us that the answers lie within. She embodies courage, leadership, heart-centered spirituality, and steadfast loyalty. Through her we learn  that love transcends everything, even physical death.

In 2014 and 2017 I embarked upon pilgrimages to the South of  France to more deeply experience her stories and legends. She has a powerful presence in France.

This year I have felt called to deepen my research and experience of her  through a visit to the Holy Land (Israel) to walk in her footsteps, and to work on completing my book, A Calling of the Heart, the Mary Magdalene Story. My trip is scheduled for April 23rd.
