Help Recover the History of Iwakuni Air Base

Donation protected
Tavistock Books, a rare book store in Alameda, CA has an unpublished scrapbook of original letters from a Marine Major, who apparently served on the HQ staff of 1MAW from 1955 – 1956 in Korea and Iwakuni. There are about 600 pages of letters documenting in detail the goings on of 1MAW during a transformational time when they moved from Pohang, Korea to NAS Iwakuni, Japan; where they then established the first major Marine presence on the base occupying the newly constructed Wingside area. These letters contain details of the history of NAS Iwakuni that are undocumented anywhere else in the world. According to Naval History and Heritage Command, and verified by my research at the National Archives and MCAS Iwakuni archives, almost no official records exist for NAS Iwakuni. Likewise, no official records for 1MAW exist during this time period as well. Very few memoirs are available in print or on the web. This find is rare, so the price is steep - $750!

Help me to fund this purchase to recover the early history of Iwakuni Air Base and share it with the world. Once purchased I will scan every letter and send digital copies via FTP to everyone who contributes. Once scanned, I will donate this book to the Marine Corps University Archives in Quantico for other researchers to access freely. Between my trips to archives around the globe and other purchases of digitized archival material I just don’t have the research budget to cover this expense.

Cost Summary:
Shipping and donation transaction fees (assuming $20 minimum per donation) add up to an estimated $45.20 for a total of $795.20 minimum needed for this purchase. Fundraising goal is set at $800, which leaves a $4.80 contingency to cover donation fees on smaller amounts. Smaller donations equate to a greater number of donations to reach the goal, which increases total of all transaction fees.
