Help Save our English School!

Donation protected
Nicaragua is in the midst of a humanitarian crisis that began two months ago and has impacted every aspect of Nicaraguan life. As a non-profit English school, our mission has always been to provide students with the abilities and confidence to learn a new language.  For our students, learning English can provide significant economic advancement and the opportunity to better their lives. However, the current political situation has put our mission at risk and now, more than ever, our school represents a tangible hope for a better future.

We love our work and are inspired by our students’ determination to learn English.

The Crisis in Nicaragua: The Short Story

·      Two months ago, peaceful protests against the government were met with violence
·      Over 285 people have been killed, 1,500 + wounded and hundreds are missing
·      Hundreds of neighbourhoods have built road blocks to protect themselves from government attacks
·      Travel and delivery of basic goods is close to impossible
·      The economy's in crisis, people can't get to work, tourism has collapsed, thousands are out of work

Help build pathways to a brighter future

In the third poorest country in Latin America, the school’s monthly fee is a great investment to our students. This means students are incredibly motivated to learn English since they know the potential for professional opportunities in today’s global world. Knowing English provides them with greater access to jobs in tourism, international companies, and abroad. It is this optimism and drive that motivates our students and us, at The English House.

Our school

The English House began two and a half years ago with just 10 students. In April, our enrollment reached 300. Some of our students travel up to one and a half hours to access an affordable and quality education with dynamic, student-centered classes by passionate and experienced English teachers.

Why We Need Your Help

In such difficult times, it is important to retain some normalcy and continue to work towards a goal. Having concrete objectives motivates and empowers people, even at times when they feel powerless.

For our students, that goal is learning English. Many dream of one day working in the tourism industry and for them, the school is not only a building with 4 walls; it’s a safe, encouraging place where personal growth can happen, a place where they can achieve their dreams. But without consistent practice, they will lose their ability to speak, making all of their previous hard work and financial sacrifice meaningless.

Since the crisis began, we have lowered our price to just $10 a month, while still offering all the amenities and quality as before. But this still isn’t enough. It’s often the case that our most motivated students are also the most vulnerable. With your support we can raise enough funds to extend our scholarship programme to students who have been most affected. We aim to stay open for as long as we can, allowing ourselves and our students more time to adjust to the current political and economic situation.

Just a small donation can help us stay open.

$10- covers a student’s monthly payment
$50- covers the cost of school materials for a month
$50- covers the monthly cost of a teacher per class

We are deeply dedicated to our students and we will be here for them as long as they continue to come.

More than just English classes....

       Scholarships

In collaboration with NGOs such as Empowerment International, Up Nicaragua, Education Plus, and Nica Life, and individual donors, we've been able to provide financial assistance to 33 students living in extreme poverty.

       Extra Support

At our 'Drop-In' students have the opportunity to practice their English and receive help from volunteers supporting the school; this can be in the form of conversational practice or other activities in our small computer center. This is offered as a free service for both present and past students to maintain their English.

       Internships

Some of our students receive paid internships that involve admin and student support. We chose our interns based on their motivation to learn English and demonstration of financial need.
