"The windows of my soul I throw wide open to the sun."
- John Greenleaf Whittier
Charter Oak's inspiring Rose Window has been a witness to the traditional Jewish ceremonies, Christian liturgies, community conversations, films, performances, and youth programs that have found a home in this welcoming space for over 140 years.
The Rose Window, or more accurately the installation of multiple windows that form a visual centerpiece for our Bimah, is in serious disrepair. Nearly a century-and-a-half of harsh weather conditions have led to a potentially irreversible degradation of the stained glass, the frame, and the Bimah's structural integrity. In short: it is in danger of collapse!
The Rose Window sits at the heart of Charter Oak Cultural Center, reminding us that this structure was built as Connecticut's first synagogue. The" Lukhot HaBrit"/Decalogue that serves as the focal piece of the window symbolizes our building's spiritual origins. Today, the window symbolizes our need for light during dark times, our moral imperative to serve everyone in our community, and as a reminder of the colorful spirit of the arts.
As custodians of this historic property, WE CANNOT LOSE THIS TREASURE!! In the new year, we are looking forward to announcing an expansive campaign that will address the structural deficiencies of the building and new construction that will allow us to better serve the community. In the meantime, the Rose Window is in need of immediate repair. Won't you please consider a gift today to help us save this irreplaceable window?
