Help Save Meri from Misery

This campaign is for Meri, who has been followed by one tragic life event after another for years. Only ten years ago Meri had a normal life, family and friends and even a steady relationship. However, now at 37 years of age she has nothing and no one and as a result of all the hardships, she experienced a mental breakdown.
She first lost her mother to cancer and not long after her brother was in a horrible car accident which left him paralyzed and hooked up on machines to survive. Unfortunately, his condition never got better and after 2 years of vegetative state he too passes away. After losing both her mother and her brother, Meri continues to live with her stepfather as an only member of her nucleus family. However, only a year later she is faced with another tragic loss when her stepfather also passes away. This is the breaking point in Meri’s emotional health and she suffers a mental breakdown. This beautiful young woman, at this point in her early 30’s has no one and her mind is failing her so she ends up wandering the streets alone, eating whatever she can find and wearing whatever clothes she had left over from her previous life.
Meri lives in Macedonia, the second poorest country in Europe where there is no institutional safety net and without family to help her get through these horrendous times, her chances of survival were slim to none. For years she was treated badly by the community and most people looked the other way when they saw her coming or even worse harassed her and bullied her.
About three years ago, after an incident, she gets committed to a mental institution for a few months. She got diagnosed and put on medication. Although, not completely recovered, the meds worked to get her stable and in a much better condition than before. Throughout these miserable years the only help and support she received was from her neighbors who unfortunately are moving away very soon. So she will lose what little support she had. She lives in an apartment she inherited from her stepfather which doesn’t even have the legal documents to prove ownership of. The apartment is in a horrible condition which you can clearly see from the photos and in addition the electricity has been turned off by the electric company for 7 years due to unpaid bills of 424 USD. Just stop and think for a second what it is like to live in this apartment, alone, with no electricity for 7 years. She gets social service benefit of a 78 USD a month and in this city the bare minimum to survive is 350 USD. Water has also been turned off due to unpaid bills in the amount of 6,240 USD.
Our foundation Warm a Heart managed to gather some furniture and a company volunteered to paint the walls of the apartment. We also found a dentist who volunteered to fix her teeth because she is in a lot of pain due to decay and cavities. We are in need of financial help to fix up the apartment, pay the debt to the electric and water companies and to give her a chance to fully recover so she can become a contributing member of society. We are aware that it will take time so we are hoping to be able to provide her with enough funds to have a normal life for a year in which we will provide her with all the support to recover, attend some classes and get back into the workforce.
