Help save UK's first black bookshop
Donation protected
My grandad John La Rose (RIP 2006) and Sarah White, established New Beacon Books in 1966. It is the UKs longest running independent bookshop specialising in African-Caribbean literature, cards and artwork.
Some of you may have heard that after 50 years, New Beacon Books would be closing down at the end of January 2017.
This is incorrect.
Whilst we are well aware that the world of physical books and publishing has changed enormously since 1966, we are also aware that our presence in the community as a learning resource is vital for future generations. However, in order to sustain OUR place in the community we need to modernise the way we currently exist.
1) We need a website where we can sell our books to customers all over the world. We don't have one at present which is unheard of in this day and age. The website needs to link in with our till system and stock system, managing what's in stock, making it easier to add new titles etc.
2) We need a new shop front, the current one has been in place for 30 years with not much street appeal.
3) We need to upgrade the interior of the shop making space for new books, shelving and community space (creating a children's reading corner/meeting space and hub for book signings, poetry readings etc.)
4) We need to make repairs to the roof which is currently leaking and upgrade electrical system.
5) We need a new EPOS till system to scan books on purchase, recording stock levels etc.
We've received lots of offers of help and support from members of the community which is fantastic (thank you) and we will be meeting with those members soon, however we do realise this is a huge project and we need financial support from the community to realise these plans!
Hopefully with your support we can continue for another 50 years!
