My name is Kaine Ward, I'm an 18-year-old dancer from Hertfordshire (UK) and I've just finished 8 years of training at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts.
In February, I took a risk and flew to New York City by myself (my first time travelling alone!) to audition for The Juilliard School , something that most people dream of; myself included.
The Juilliard School has molded pioneers in Dance, Drama and Music including inspirations such as Ohad Naharin, Yo-Yo Ma, Pina Bausch and Robin Williams. After a grueling audition process, I was one of 4 that made it through all of the cuts on the day.

After an agonizing wait, I received the news that I was one of 12 young men globally accepted into the world-renowned school. Being the only dancer chosen from the UK (and one of four from outside of the USA) is a huge privilege and to have the chance to join this group of 24 elite dancers under the direction of some of the greatest teachers in the world is an opportunity that I never thought I would have the chance to take.

But with privilege, comes a price... Even after being awarded a scholarship worth $30,000, a remaining £30,000 is still required for me to attend the school for just one year towards a four year ‘Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree’ course. This amount is more than my mum earns each year making it virtually impossible for me to reach the financial needs of the school on our own.
I have been working as a lifeguard for the past two years alongside spending my holidays and breaks at school working for our associate programs to help accumulate some money to put towards my training. Also, at the age of 11, I played the part of Billy Elliot in London's West End, these funds, alongside everything that my family can offer still doesn’t come close to the total cost required.
Unfortunately I am also unable to take out a student loan from either country, as I will be on a student visa and not attending school in the United Kingdom.
