Help send much needed surplus RAH Medical Equipment to Lira Uganda

The South Australian Government have generously donated surplus RAH medical equipment  to the Ugandan Community of South Australia as part of the move to the new RAH site, and in conjunction with 'Donation in Kind - Rotary Australia World Community Services'.

In February 2018, 'Donation in Kind' gave us precious medical equipment to fill more than a 40-foot container load. We have decided to prioritise surgical equipment, dental chairs, hospital beds and many necessities from the equipment wish-list received from Lira, Uganda. The equipment will help save lives and reduce impoverishment due to unnecessary referral cost outside Lira.  To health providers, it will help improve quality of care, it will encourage, empower and enable the dedicated nurses, doctors and allied health staff to provide the care that people need.

All we need is support for TRANSPORT!
The wonderful provision of this medical equipment has given us the opportunity to reach and seek partnership with you to help others. We need to ship this container load of medical equipment to Lira, Uganda-Africa in a 40-foot container to Uganda (Lira) at the cost approximately $10,000. This includes the purchase of a container, packing, shipping and the custom clearance. The short time-frame we have to temporarily store equipment in the current warehouse before shipping presses us to appeal for your urgent help.

WHY is this urgently needed?

Healthcare in Lira, Uganda

Five kilometres is a Ugandan National Standard for access to healthcare. The goal is that no one should need to walk more than five kilometres to reach healthcare services. The Lira district of Northern Uganda is a challenging place to live, only 37% of the population live within 5 kilometres of a health service.  Geographic challenges have been compounded by over 20 years of brutality of Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) led by self-styled rebel leader Joseph Kony in Lira and the surrounding districts in Northern Uganda.

This war did not only caused loss of lives, displacement, destruction of property and infrastructure. It also created long term unique problems such as impoverishment and health challenges for trained health professionals who live and work in the region, attempting to provide healthcare to the most needy, the people of Lira.

Example of current practises:
Martin a 59-year old in rural Uganda, was involved in a car accident at night, 28 Kilometres away from Lira Hospital. He was taken to Lira hospital by truck as there are no ambulance services in country areas. The only single Ambulance the hospital has, had broken down for over three months. Martin finally reached the hospital at midnight.  In the morning, he was referred for an X-ray examination in a private imaging centre as the Hospital cannot afford to offer X-ray services. The X-ray result revealed multiple breaks of his left thigh.

Surgery was needed, but not available for a further 7 days as the district hospital lacks resources for Orthopaedic surgery. After 7 days he was referred to the National Referral Hospital 340 km away for Surgery. The good news is Martin recovered well! The bad news is that Martin is not alone in his experience. This affects many with health needs in this district.

I am passionately committed to helping support the community and the health professionals who would do more if only they had better and more equipment.

Please join me and be an agent for change so that we can reduce impoverishment due to catastrophic health care expenditures, avoidable maternal and neonatal death in this population. This desire is achievable with availability of a well-equipped health facility to perform lifesaving procedures and care.  Your generous donation will help the local Ugandan Community of South Australia to urgently transport medical equipment to Northern Uganda.

Thank you for your donation!
