About the show:
"Don’t worry about what you’re wearing, as long as what you’re wearing is black."

Leanne Moden felt like she’d finally found her place when she accidentally became a teenage goth in rural Norfolk in 2002. But, can you base your entire identity on the music you listen to or the clothes you wear? In this vulnerable, honest and thought-provoking performance, Leanne explores isolation, personal transformations and the ways in which we define ourselves. Combining poetry, storytelling, humour and movement, Skip Skip Skip is a show about belonging, discovering your identity, and the lengths we all go to fit in.

My story:
I started writing and performing poetry back in 2010, and since then I’ve been lucky enough to find an incredible supportive community of writers and artists across the UK. I didn’t always feel like I belonged and, when I was younger, music was a real refuge for me.

Skip Skip Skip is my first full-length spoken word show, and it developed from conversations with friends and colleagues about how music shapes our friendships, personalities and lives, especially during those tricky teenage years. This show is a celebration of questionable teenage decisions, a love letter to the awkwardness of adolescence, and a note to anyone struggling with anything outside of their control: things can get better.

I started writing Skip Skip Skip in August 2018, working with wonderful performers including Mark Grist, Roger Robinson, John Berkavitch and Dan Webber. Now, I’m finally ready to take the whole thing up to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. But I need your help!

Who I am:
Hello! My name is Leanne, and I’m a poet, based in Nottingham. I’ve been telling poems at events across the UK and Europe since 2010, including recent performances at TEDx WOMEN, WOMAD Festival, Sofar Sounds, Bestival on the Isle of Wight and the Fourth Wave Feminist Festival, as well as festivals in Estonia and Spain. I’ve been a national finalist at the BBC Edinburgh Fringe Slam, the Hammer and Tongue slam, Poetry Rivals, the Camden Roundhouse Slam, the Axis Slam, and the Anti-Slam. My work often focuses on belonging, identity and community, and I can’t wait to share Skip Skip Skip with audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

Taking the show to Edinburgh:
I’m really pleased to have been offered a slot at the PBH Free Fringe, performing at the Banshee Labyrinth! I’ll be there every day every day at 7pm from 17th to the 25th August.

Taking a show to Edinburgh is really expensive, especially for a solo performer. Here’s a list of the up-front costs associated with the show:

Accommodation £500
Travel £100
Printing flyers and posters £250
Video recording costs £150
TOTAL: £1000

I know that times are tight right now, but if you’ve got a couple of quid to spare, and you’d like to support your local poet, I’d be so grateful. Anything you can contribute, no matter how small a donation, is so much appreciated.

You can also help by liking and following my social media accounts. It doesn't sound like much, but having loads of lovely smiley people pop up in your newsfeed really does help!
