Shooting of Elephants in Botswana
Botswana has around 130,000 elephants, the largest elephant population in the world. It has long been hailed as a safe refuge in Africa for the Elephants amid a poaching crisis
The current government lead by President Mogweesti Masisi recently said it would consider lifting a ban on hunting elephants, to allow trophy hunters and others to shoot elephants and turn culled elephants into canned pet food.
President Masisi intends to adopt this policy to create an economic incentive for rural populations primarily in an election year and to gain support for his ruling Botswana Democratic Party.
Duma Boko, a Harvard trained lawyer is the leader of the UDC, the coalition of the opposition parties in Botswana. In 2014, the Opposition won 54% of the popular vote and it is anticipated that with inclusion of the BCP party in the UDC, additional support and funding the UDC lead by Duma Boko is clearly positioned to win the elections to be held in Botswana in October this year, despite the Botswana Democratic Party’s unfair and underhand tactics in using State power and Government resources in Elections.
Duma Boko is an ardent supporter of Conservation.
The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) led by Duma Boko are putting policies in place to
1. safeguard the elephants
2. stop the killing of massive numbers of elephants
3. boost tourism
4. create jobs
5. reduce human/animal conflict
6. successfully manage the Elephant population
7. educating communities on the longer term benefits of conservation
and co-existence
8. allowing local communities to benefit from the intelligent control of
the Elephants.
All across Africa, Elephants are fighting for survival due to poachers and hunters. Elephants are classified as near threatened. Elephants are killed by trophy hunters, military personnel and criminal syndicates. Elephant tusks are used as a symbol of status primarily in Asia.
Duma Boko, a champion of conservation has criticized the Masisi lead Government for its environmental and conservation policies.
With elections in Botswana in October, Masisi wishes to lift the hunting ban and allow the killing of Elephants to win rural votes.
Sustainable tourism is a far better model. Please support Duma Boko in the elections in October and his conservation efforts so that the policies of President Masisi are reversed, the Elephants are not killed and Botswana’s international reputation for conservation is not damaged.
We need to act now and cannot afford to lose any more of these gentle giants.
Thank you. Every donation no matter how small is appreciated.
