Help Us Lay Evie to Rest

Evelyn Cook was the love of Kairi’s life. She was an exceptionally kind, intelligent, funny, and beautiful person. She made connections wherever she went, and impacted the lives of so many people around her. She was also, like Kairi, transgender, and struggled throughout her life with her mental health. The two of them supported each other through the worst of times.

We are heartbroken to say that Evie took her life on the 24th of May this year, aged 24.

The circumstances of her death are complicated and upsetting, and there are investigations underway by the police as well as the RBWH concerning potential medical negligence. Early processes for a State Coroner’s inquest are underway.

Right now we’re waiting for a review by the RBWH before we can give more information but we’ll update as much as we can, since we know this will be a meeting point for everyone who loved and cared about her.

All of this has taken an enormous toll on Kairi, who has been struggling to cope with Evie’s death while also planning her funeral, and navigating the post-death investigations that have arisen. On top of all this, she is struggling with her own mental health, an arm injury and back-related disability. She is physically, mentally, and financially exhausted, has fallen behind on rent and can’t afford to feed herself, let alone pay for mounting funeral expenses.

Her friends and family have rallied around her over the past 6 weeks, doing as much as we can to give her love and support, help with household chores, food and transport, and covering some rent, but we’ve realised we need some serious help.

We’re aiming to raise enough money to cover the cost of a funeral for Evie and to take some of the burden of living expenses off of Kairi’s shoulders. Right now we're estimating around $12,000, but it's a flexible goal.

Whatever you can give towards laying Evie to rest and helping Kairi in such an awful situation will be appreciated more than words can say.
