We (Sangho and Inji) are graduate students at University of Waterloo in Canada and at Seoul National University in Korea!
Sangho in Burundi
Inji in Ethiopia
Through our volunteer activities abroad, particularly in Africa, we learned how important English is to the students there, as English could provide them with opportunities to escape poverty and improve their lives. Unfortunately, even though the students often have volunteers from abroad serving as English teachers, their stay only last a short-term, making it difficult for most students to make meaningful progress in their learning.
Also, from the experience of interacting with the retired elderly at nursing homes in the U.S., we learned about the loneliness and social isolation problems affecting the retired elderly.
Our experiences have led us to seek a solution that would 1. provide elementary and middle school students in poor and uneducated regions of Africa opportunities to learn a foreign language, and 2. solve the loneliness and social isolation problems of retired older people in the US and Canada.
To tackle these problems, we created "Gible," a video chat based second language education and mentoring service through which elementary and middle school students in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania who need language education opportunities can communicate and practice English with retired elderly people in Canada.
Since September of last year, our team has been working on this project, (1) visiting the schools in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania, and (2) testing the internet infrastructure in Africa as well as the quality of video chat between these schools and the eastern part of Canada, and (3) developing the "Gible" system and contents that will enable video chat and continued learning for these students.
Last month (i.e., September), our team visited Hanbyul School in Ethiopia and set up an internet connection in its computer room. We have conducted a survey, interviews, and tests between the school and Waterloo in Canada to test our idea of connecting children in Africa and the elderly in Canada.
Now we are looking forward to testing “Gible” with students in Hanbyul school and the elderly in Canada in November-December 2018!
We need your help in paying for the operating costs of our team and the after-school program at Hanbyul School. Plus, We are looking for the elderly interested in making an impact on these children!
Help us make impactful connections and join us on our journey!
