Help us rescue Shongweni Reserve!

#Shongweni67

“…looking back on what we have achieved and forward to what we will achieve…”

A year ago the #Shongweni67 initiative was driven by Conservation Guardians  towards reviving the Shongweni Dam and Reserve. €800 was raised last year from the event, a far cry from the target we set of €25000. This past year’s costs exceeded a million rand, with Conservation Guardians not taking any salary for their contribution.

We now embark on the challenges that face us in the second year of our tenure. With 25km’s of no fencing, no vehicles (other than our personal vehicle) or critical resources, we strive toward establishing a trained and skilled anti-poaching and theft unit that will curb the illegal poaching for bush meat that threatens the reserves wildlife. This initiative together with the sustainable objectives of establishing an aquaculture project in the reservoirs below the dam wall and making briquettes and charcoal from water hyacinth, will enable us to build our relationship with neighbouring community members and curb their impact on the reserve and its natural resources.

Losing wildlife to snares set by subsistence poachers is demoralising and despite having no government funding to rebuild our fences, we can make a difference and will make a difference by training and deploying an extended team of field rangers who remove snares and discourage subsistence poachers.

We need your support to implement the plan.

How you can support us:

On the 18th July 2019 Conservation Guardians  will kayak/paddlefor 67km’s on the Shongweni Dam,  in a quest to raise desperately needed funds for those  basic needs we require to continue building the reserve and saving the biodiversity that few people recognise as the most basic foundation to the beauty we all enjoy.

Just as Mandela Day calls for 67 minutes of community work, so we are kayaking/paddling 67 kilometres and asking our supporters to donate a value per kilometre we paddle.

We ask you to take this a step further and to challenge your followers or groups to match your donation.

Your donation will help us make the change that is so desperately needed.
