Help save Burundian coffee farmers

Donation protected

Intro:
Who we are: This project was created by Supremo NV, we are a Belgian based trade house who source coffee from a variety of origins around the world and transport it to our customers mainly in Europe. The Akawa project was created when we saw the hardship taking place in Burundi and when we noticed an opportunity to help and create a sustainable future for the coffee farmers.
Over the last year, we have created a partnership with Succam who are managing all operations on the ground in Burundi regarding our project. Supremo, however, will manage the donations received and distribute them to where we see best fitting to stay in line with our outlined project.
All donations received will be publicly displayed on our website along with our budget for this project. All transactions will be 100% traceable and this can also be followed through our website.

Project Akawa is focused on helping create a sustainable future for the coffee farmers of Burundi through increasing coffee production and empowering the farmers.

Burundi is a collapsing country which can be considered in many ways as a failed state. Farmers have been cultivating coffee for more than 30 years. they overcame a decade of civil war, droughts and lack of government support to continue producing an appreciated coffee bean.
Farmers are brave here, they do not have water pipes to bring fresh water in their homes nor electricity. The routine is divided between the time looking for water, the work in small self-consumption crops and carefully cultivating the coffee. They faced all these difficulties yet they do not give up and the fight through/

That's why we chose this challenge: to bring help to farmers whose are struggling.
A little bit of support will go a long way and make a big difference to the farmers and families.

The potential is a key driver behind this project. Currently, Burundian coffee trees produce a fraction of what is possible and what is produced as the world average, therefore there is a unique opportunity here to make a big change to the country.

What your money will do:

Your money will be used to produce baby coffee plants that will be given to the farmers.
As of May 2017, we have created a 6-year project with the aim not to just to help farmers in the short term but instead create a sustainable future for the decades to come.
This campaign is the start of that journey.

We are logically starting at the source of the problem, the current coffee plants in Burundi produce just half of what they are capable of, therefore farmers are automatically limited as to the amount of coffee they can grow this creates a vicious cycle of low yield and low revenue. (the average farmer earns just $80 each year for their coffee)
