In Support of Upinder & Jasleen Minhas

On July 14th, 2018, while on a trip to visit family in Texas, the Minhas family suffered a devastating loss when members representing three generations of their family were killed in a head-on motor vehicle collision.  Upinder Singh Minhas (38), a hardworking, generous and loving father of three; his mother Nirmal Kaur Minhas (68); and his beloved six-year-old son Mehar Singh Minhas all tragically died. Upinder’s daughter Jupleen (8) and his wife Jasleen are recovering from their injuries which include broken collar bones, rib bones and lung injuries. His oldest daughter Mehak (10) suffered a traumatic spinal injury to her L1-L4 vertebrae. After enduring several major surgeries to stabilize the spine, Mehak has woken up to paraplegia (loss of sensation and movement in her legs and lower body). She also suffered a broken radius and ankle as well as damage to her intestines with loss of bladder & bowel control. In addition, all have suffered tremendous psychological trauma.

Mehak is a sweet, vivacious girl who loves her family, friends and performance arts including Bhangra (traditional Indian folk dance). She has a beautiful, brave and inspiring smile that she readily shares with anyone she encounters. Mehak’s dream is to one day dance again and express her love of Bhangra.

Mehak is currently receiving treatment for her injuries at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (UMC) in Lubbock Texas. However, plans are underway to repatriate Mehak, Jupleen and Jasleen back to Calgary, Canada for extended long term care needs.

At the tender age of ten, Mehak is aware of the long and difficult path ahead of her. She is focusing on all the well wishes and is fiercely determined and motivated to regain as much sensation, mobility and independence as possible through very intensive rehabilitation. This will take many months if not years.

The road to recovery is just beginning for the Minhas family. The recovery will be long both emotionally and physically. In the case that Mehak is unable to regain any mobility or sensation in the future, she may be a candidate for experimental therapies. These treatments are unfortunately costly and often require travel to different cities or countries.

This GoFundMe fundraising effort is focused on raising funds not only for the immediate medical and funeral expenses, but moreover, the future costs involved with long term care such as specialized equipment for daily activities and transport, as well as house modifications. Furthermore, some of the funds will be set aside in trust to help with Mehak’s and Jupleen’s future educational costs which was always a high priority for Upinder.

Jasleen has been deeply moved and appreciates all the outpouring of love and support for her and her daughters during these very difficult times. She has only just begun to process the magnitude of her unimaginable loss.

In support of Jasleen, Mehak and Jupleen we are asking for donations from family, friends, colleagues and community. Your generous support and love is appreciated beyond words. Thank you.
