Help Us March on Washington!

Donation protected
My partner Tay and I are committed to marching on Washington in three weeks. But we need some help getting there.

It's important to me to do this. I think that this march will be an important and historical act of protest, and I think it is important to not normalize the events that led us to this terrifying inauguration. We are queer, and as a direct result of this Presidential election, we have noted three separate bills on the state level aimed at legalizing and enabling legal discrimination against queer people. Moreover, at the federal level we are seeing our own senator, Sen. Ted Cruz, pushing a bill intended to allow people to disciminate against us on legal grounds without any kind of penalty or legal recourse. And that's only the bills aimed at us which popped up in the weeks after the Presidential election.

We are afraid. So it's time to stand up.

Unfortunately, we're not going to be able to catch the bus up. I'll be staying with my grandmother, where the travel buses going out of Austin are not headed, but more importantly, the time off we've been able to secure from our collective workplaces will not allow us to manage the bus journey. My partner works at a pawn shop that is badly understaffed as it is, and taking the bus back would mean that she would have to manage a 22-hour bus ride and then immediately turn around and work an 11-hour shift at the shop.

Our finances have been stretched very thin right now between the holidays, about $1500 in unexpected expenses on our car and in vet bills, and donating to a few organizations that needed help in November on top of an already tight household budget. We can make this if we have to by putting the trip on a credit card, and in fact will do that regardless of what happens here. It will mean that we drop into credit card debt for a while and will need to make some sacrifices in our day to day lives, but we'll survive. This march is important to us.

But we could really use a helping hand to pay for the airfare to get us to DC. I hate having to admit that--asking for money and help is not something I have ever, ever been called to do--but that's where we are at now. Please help us to make this march. Even a little bit would help. We will be eternally grateful. We're asking for the barest minimum we think we'll need to pay for our flights to Washington.

Thank you.
