HIV/AIDS volunteer trip to JAMAICA
Donation protected
In Jamaica, around 32,000 people are living with HIV, with around 50% of sufferers not even aware of their condition. This situation does not only impact the lives of those already with the condition, but also has massive potential to negatively impact the lives of many others.
For a long time now, it has been a real aspiration of mine to volunteer in Jamaica to help the less advantaged. This coming June, I plan to finally make my journey to Jamaica to aid with the volunteer programme with Projects-Abroad for 4 weeks to help provide service to existing HIV/AIDS patients, and participate in schemes to educate local communities, individuals and, importantly, schools.
Whilst child HIV rates in Jamaica are relatively low, an estimated 11,000 women aged 15 or above are currently living with the condition, a clear risk to their future childrens' health. As a volunteer, I will be able to visit HIV/AIDS clinics and help meet the needs of many women with the disease.
The key word here? Awareness. The goal of my trip is to raise awareness; of how HIV is transmitted, of its health consequences and, most crucially, how to protect oneself.
Your donation goes towards:
Program Fees
-My accommodation (a local host family and the great food they'll kindly give me to fatten me up...)
-Project orientation and in-country support staff
-Transport to and from the airport
-Future programme development
Registration Fees
- Pre placement support from Projects-Abroad
-Checking and vetting local organisations
-Administration and marketing costs.
Other...
-Return flights to and from Montego Bay, Jamaica
By assisting me in reaching this fundraising target, you will not only be helping those in need of support, but you'll also be helping me to achieve a long-term ambition of mine. Jamaica, along with Barbados, is one of my two countries of heritage: to return and be able to help the people in the land I'm from would be an extremely humbling experience for me. Giving back & creating smiles is what life is all about!
Values from Projects-Abroad.org
"Contribution: We believe in helping where help is needed, even in far-away places, whether it is needed by an individual, an organization, an environmental project, or an entire community; we respond to need as effectively as we can with our abilities and our resources.
"Culture: We believe in the value of cultural exchange between young people from different communities; such exchange helps to create a world with greater mutual respect and understanding."
