Centerville Boy Scout Troop 33 to deliver Holiday Food Baskets to fill the gap in Appanoose County

A few years ago, Morgan Cline began donating 50 baskets of food a year to needy folks in Appanoose County, Iowa at Christmas time. Boy Scout Troop 33 was tasked with delivering these baskets to a list of addresses of folks in the county who could use them. This was a life-changing event for the boys, seeing the appreciation in the recipients eyes, they began to sense the real needs that exist in the community.

When Morgan Cline passed away in 2014, the Holiday Food Basket program that he started came to a stop. But the Boy Scouts knew the need still existed and are now getting the program back into operation. With some help, they found all of the pieces to the puzzle: the food ordered from HyVee at a deep discount, the location to assemble the boxes, the list of addresses where to deliver the food baskets which is still being compiled. But there was an extra step that Morgan Cline didn’t have – finding money to pay for the food.

With a helping hand from Centerville Rotary and the BOB group, plus several generous donations from individuals, the Holiday Food Basket program is back on track! So far there is $2,200 in place to pay for the food. But another $650 is still needed.

You may ask why this program is necessary with the other holiday programs like Operation Santa and the SEIDA food baskets for the elderly.  These baskets will be delivered to folks that are not be receiving other food gifts this season. There is a SEIDA Holiday food program to help needy elderly folks and there is Operation Santa to help those families with children. This program fills the gap for those families who don’t qualify for the other programs either by age or by dependents.

The baskets are valued at a little over $60 each and
include a ham, some cans of vegetables, potatoes, eggs, milk, bread, pasta, sauce, and lots of other good ingredients to make several different meals of nutritious food. They are designed to feed a family of 4 for several meals around the holidays. The baskets will be assembled and delivered on Saturday, December 19, the weekend before Christmas.

Can you help fill those last few baskets? Your donation will help feed needy folks in Appanoose County a nice Christmas dinner and then some.  Thank you for your support!
