Our Goal: Remove the Remains of our House ($34K), which will require Heavy Equipment and Expensive County Landfill Fees. Repair and Rebuild our Damaged Driveway ($5K).
What Happened: On September 27, 2024, Hurricane Helene dropped 20" of rain on Boone NC, in Western North Carolina. This triggered a massive Landslide behind our house, which totally destroyed it. A large tree root slid down the mountain and slammed into the back corner of the house, twisting it 45°, and pushing it off the foundation about 30'. It is now slowly sliding down the hill. We did not have Landslide Insurance (no one in NC does), so the Insurance Company denied our claim, and then canceled our Insurance Policy the next day.
Our Address: 936 Friendship Church Road, Boone, NC 28607.
Who Are We: Retired Homeowners, Meta Gatschenberger, RN and Scott Richardson. This was our Full Time home, not a summer home.
Nightmare of Paperwork and Red Tape
• County Condemned our Property.
• Insurance Company DENIED our Landslide Claim, then CANCELED our Insurance Policy the next day. They don't even sell Landslide Insurance in North Carolina.
• Bank CANCELED our home equity line of credit, cutting off any repair or cleanup funds.
We are Retired Seniors living on Social Security.
