Heroes For The Homeless

Welcome!

Hey everyone!!! Welcome to the second annual Heroes for the Homeless collection! I cannot thank you all enough for your contributions last year, as they blew my expectations out of the water. The grand total of $2,257.44 collected through monetary donations was overwhelming to say the least. The physical donations also extended far beyond what I had hoped for, as canned goods, cereal, oatmeal, juice boxes, batteries, and coats-- just to name a few items-- swamped each of the collection sites. Needless to say, all of the money and items were put to good use. There have been a handful of times where I have seen people along the North Shore with the same bags we distributed last year. The nurse practitioners distributing the bags have informed me that they STILL have some from last year, and that the contents of the bags have proved useful to recipients-- even through the summer months.

Why are we doing this?
WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!  In the past 6 months, there has been a massive implosion of homeless people in the greater Pittsburgh area. With pandemic restrictions being lifted with the arrival of a vaccine, eviction notices that had been postponed are now being put into effect. The rapid return to normalcy hasn't been a good thing for everyone; hundreds of individuals have been diagnosed with clinical anxiety and depression as a result of the abrupt lifestyle change they have been forced to abide by. All this animosity has been disruptive to some families, leaving certain individuals without a support system or someone to turn to. This intense mental burden is greater on no one than the impoverished population.

What goes in the bags?
With that being said, we have decided that the proceeds from this year's collection will be used to pack bags again. Similar to last year, each bag will contain handwarmers, batteries, socks, apple sauce packets, bug spray, and mental health resource cards.  These were the main-ticket items, and we hope to fill as many bags as possible with them. The supplies used to fill the bags will be a mix of both goods purchased with the monetary donations, as well as the physical donations.

Looking forward…

We are also in the process of becoming an official 501© (3) nonprofit organization. At the conclusion of all the legal proceedings that this process entails, we hope to have this title by the spring of 2022.
