Here I answer how I was called
Hi, Follower of Jesus and, hopefully, new friend!
Thank you for your interest.
I'm a retired social worker who's been called—for a really long time (over 36 years)—to serve Jesus overseas, long-term, in Zimbabwe, Africa.
My family and long-term friends know that this has been a calling for a long time. How I received this calling and how Zimbabwe was selected is a long story that I explained on the video.
Because of my calling, I've had a heart for Zimbabwe and their beautiful people for a really long time.
I was officially accepted to a YWAM (Youth With A Mission) missions and discipleship school in Zimbabwe February 15. I'll be staying afterwards for a long while, at least a year; hopefully, several.
It looks like, among other things, I will be part of a newer ministry involving micro loans for agricultural and business start-ups to bless the local economy.
I will also be teaching Bible studies and life skills to women and youth.
I'd love to help ministries bring permanent fresh water sources to outlying villages where diseases like cholera are still rampant. More of my responsibilities will be detailed as I arrive and go through their school.
I've been writing for years. I blog for Christian singles at http://www.glendablogz.com and at award-winning Single Matters magazine https://www.singlematters.com/author/glenda-gordon/ , so I volunteered to take photos and help produce content for their social media.
It sounds like a lot, but I will do whatever I'm called to do when I arrive. I pray that many families and women will benefit from my experience and service there.
Once I get through both discipleship programs (see 2. below), I will be able to live on, probably, less than half of my meager pension, so I won't have to raise support for living expenses. I just haven't been able to save the funds since I retired to do all that I'm here on Go Fund Me for. (The small savings I had were spent on my move across the country in 2017, which was also a directive from the Holy Spirit. Don't worry, I'm not a mystic!)
I would love for you to partner with me in serving Zimbabweans. You can partner by donating toward the following:
1. One way airfare each way from Charlotte, NC, to Zimbabwe, and back. I know when I'm leaving, but not when I'm coming back. I'm securing a distant return trip because many communities like to see proof that long-term visitors are not coming to their country to exploit their countrymen. Now, I discovered last spring that I get the best price if I book about 10-14 days in advance. However, since summer is travel season in the US and I'm still trying to collect the funds to get the ticket, the price is going up the longer I wait. I hope to purchase my ticket long before July 1; say, by Sunday, June 23. I'm not certain I will be able to schedule a flight back on such ample notice, for example, for a medical or family emergency; hence the cost. Cost: $1500 going there, $1700 coming back, not including tax.
2. Tuition & housing for the first school. The second school is a new program, still in development. With major changes happening with Zimbabwe's currency, pricing has not yet been set. The first school starts in July, which I have already paid; the second one is scheduled to start in January. Cost: $750 (for the first school; I estimate the second to be about the same and hopefully, I will be able to pay for it on time).
3. Storage unit move. I will need to rent a truck to move my belongings. It turns out I don't have to fly anywhere, but I have to feed the moving crew. Cost: $200, not including tax.
4. Support raising. This includes the cost of:
—flying to three cities on the west coast to meet with family, friends, former ministry associates to personally share this ministry opportunity (estimates about $450 for four flights, not including tax). NOTE: the price was doubled due to unforeseen and unpreventable circumstances that I could not schedule around.
5. Car rental. I rented a car both in Washington State and Southern California to get my prayer cards out and meet with potential donors and churches. Total cost: $493
I hope to fly out Friday, July 5, in time to check in July 6 in Zimbabwe. July 6 is the earliest we can check in.
NOTE: I did receive enough of these funds to pay off my entire tuition and order 500 prayer cards the first week of April. (I changed my original order from printing two items to now printing one, which ended up being cheaper!)
The newsletter is up and running, to keep my family, friends, and supporters updated, both here in the US as I prepare, and when I get to Zimbabwe.
Please pray about how much you would like to contribute. I, my fellow ministry associates, and the families, youth, and women I get to minister will all be very grateful for your generosity.
Partnership is what gets the gospel, Bible teaching, and discipleship out across the world. I hope you will be my partner in ministering these to a people whom our Lord loves at the end of the alphabet in Zimbabwe, Africa.
Any financial support would be so, so appreciated, and prayer even more so. Thank you. Love Glenda
