I want to be a Masters Champion

Donation protected
Very talented 9 year-old golfer asking for help to become a future Masters Champion. (Austin, TX)

Samuel Woodberry loves golf, is gifted in most aspects of it, and has asked us if we can find him some sponsors. He was born on August 30, 2008. By 2, he was successfully swinging an adult golf club, hitting golf balls up and down the yard for hours each day. At 5, Samuel competed in the 8-and-under age group and came in second place in his first tournament against some boys 3 years older. In that age division, he won first place in another tournament that year, then at age 7, won two tournaments in the Southern Texas Junior PGA series. Samuel has also won first place in two tournaments in 2017 (so far), at age 8 and 9, and he has big plans to win many, many more.

Samuel spends hours most days practicing and/or playing golf and it’s clear he has exceptional talent as well as intense interest and commitment to the sport. He watches YouTube videos of great players and has learned many aspects of the game from them - warmup and practice routines, which he has  emulated, how to play in all sorts of weather conditions, and how to hit different types of shots. He’s also seen them mentioning and thanking their sponsors. Sammy knows he can’t have official sponsors as an amateur golfer, but he asked us to see if friends and other golf lovers might be able to help with expenses.

His family supports him as much as possible.  His friends at the Morris Williams golf course, where his dad works, support him in amazing ways every day, too. But playing golf at Samuel’s level simply takes more resources than we have right now, so we’re hoping to find friends willing to help Samuel with his own clearly-stated goal: to “win the Masters and be the number 1 player in the world.”

This fundraising campaign is to raise $6,000 through gifts to cover the following costs through the 2017-18 winter season:
- Equipment: $1,000 for clubs, shoes, and rain/colder weather sports clothes. Samuel is big for his age (now 4’9” tall) and has no winter sports clothes that fit him yet this year.
- Local tournament fees: $1,000 to register for 20 tournaments through Little Linksters and US Kids Golf.
- Practice round fees: $1,000 for 20 practice rounds, one at each of the courses where he will compete.  Not only does Sammy insist on these course-specific practices, he also has his dad/caddie take notes about each hole to prepare him for competition.
- Regional, State, and more tournament fees and travel costs: $1,500 for 2018 regional and state competitions and, hopefully, for the World Championships at Pinehurst in the summer of 2018!
- General local travel costs (gas and food for tournaments): $500
- Coaching fees: $1,000

Samuel and his mom often do gratitude lists before bed and, among other sweet appreciations, he’s talked about being grateful for his “gift of golf.” Sammy know what he’s good at and what he wants to do with his talent. He was born  to play a beautiful but expensive sport and would love to find more partners in his journey to maximize his game.  Any amount is very helpful, and we’re happy to talk about including name recognition on his gear, if that is of interest to you.

All donations are considered gifts. Thank you very much for reading about Samuel & for thinking about helping him with expenses.
