Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless poisonous gas which is produced during incomplete burns (a combustion with not enough oxygen is present). The gas is produced in many different industries (steel industries, production of coffee and many more), and is harmful to the workers. There are currently carbon monoxide detectors, however, these detectors don’t differentiate between carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas (a by-product of many forms of industry). Because of the hydrogen gas interferention, the sensor gives a lot of useless signals, which resolve in unnecessary evictions. These unnecessary evictions costs a company a lot of money, time and the alertness of the employee drops.

As 10 students from the Rotterdam University, we are therefore developing a selective carbon monoxide detector using genetically modified bacteria. With this project we participate in the iGEM competition. This is an international competition where more than 370 teams participate. In the contest compete high schools, colleges and universities. The Rotterdam University is the first college in the Netherlands that participates. We will present our project in Boston in October to all the other teams and we can receive different prices. At the presentation will more than 6500 attendees.

During our project we combine knowledge from biology, chemistry and electrical engineering to design a device which  will detect specifically carbon monoxide. We're going to use bacterial proteins that can bind to carbon monoxide. When bound they will cause a reaction in the bacteria, which then can be picked up by our hardware.

The project is in process, but we are looking for sponsors who want to support us financially. Sponsorship would help us because we can do more research and help more employees that way. The money will eventually go to the purchase of equipment and our trip to Boston, where we have to pay for the access of the competition.

What we can offer you, depends on you. As a company, you can expect from 700 euro for example your logo on our shirts in Boston, or on our social media. Also can we be present at a corporate event. Of course, we also would like to hear from you if you have any ideas.

Thank you very much!
