I Am Not A Fortune Cookie

WHAT IS THE EVENT ABOUT?
The event hopes to raise awareness about the detriments of the racism, sexism, fetishisation and cultural appropriation that minorities – in this case specifically people of Asian descent - face daily.

I have invited four scholars and activists to speak, loop a clip given to me by Kristina Wong, set up an interactive art installation, feature art by Kate-Hers RHEE, have VJ artists perform as well as WOC DJs.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS?
•   Create a welcoming, non-judgemental environment for attendees to discuss the social, cognitive, and emotional roots of prejudice, racism, and sexism; and how they shape our society

•   Engage the wider community on issues of racism, empowering them to make changes in their own social, family and career circles

•   Work towards a closing of the gaps of segregation by bringing people together on the dancefloor. This event will be the first in a series of actions that help us to inform ourselves

WHY SUPPORT THIS PROJECT?
By supporting this project, you are contributing to an initiative that allows individuals of all societal statuses to come together and enjoy each other’s existences, all the while progressing towards a more equal future.

WHY ONLY FOCUS ON WOMEN OF ASIAN DESCENT?
This event is linked with a petition begun in response to a detrimental event named ‘Happy Ending’ during Berlin Gallery Weekend 2018. The event utilised an ancient erotic Japanese Shunga motif, offered massages and (American invented) fortune cookies, and took place in a Vietnamese restaurant.

GSG & IPC wrote, “While the hosts insist they only wanted to celebrate the culture, it is apparent that this act of cultural appropriation holds a magnitude of problematic implications, especially with regards to the intersection of colonialism and sexualised violence by white men towards women of colour. By decontextualizing the picture and offering massages they reproduce colonial and sexist practices, racial stereotyping and the festishization of Asian women.
The event’s title alone - Happy Ending - alludes to sex work and perpetuates the stereotype of the obedient, exotic sex-worker; a notion that women of Asian descent struggle with on a daily basis.
Another problem lies in the generalisation of Asian cultures: lumping together a variety of cultures, traditions and customs under the big umbrella of being Asian pays no regards or respect for their differences, individuality and origins. “
