In Memory of Julianna Carraturo

For anyone who had the opportunity to meet Julianna, you knew she was a beautiful, genuine-spirited, selfless, caring girl who accepted all with open arms. She was nurtured in a close-knit, loving family but unfortunately, that wasn’t enough.
On January 8th, 2018, Julianna, age 18, took her own life.
During her junior year of high school, Julianna was berated endlessly by a group of students whom ultimately ruined her self-image. Although we live in a society where schools, being a “safe place,” are supposed to educate their students against bullying, they too did not do much to help. The effects of bullying began to consume her life and her feelings of sadness increased.
Julianna’s life seemingly turned around when she started to attend SUNY Cortland and met a wonderful group of friends. To everyone around her the pain had been erased but we were all mistaken. As happy as Julianna seemed on the outside, the pain on the inside was still too great. Even if you apologize for shattering a glass, the glass remains broken.
There are many factors that contribute to a person’s risk for suicide and its repercussions do not discriminate. Suicide is one of the most common, yet unspoken-about subjects. To people of all ages, remember words hurt. Be conscientious of what you say and treat people with the respect you would like to receive. To parents, remind your children to be kind, for your children are a reflection of you.
The funds we are looking to raise will go towards Julianna’s family and their drive to raise awareness for bullying and ultimately suicide prevention. No amount is too small and all donations are greatly appreciated. The Kind Campaign is an internationally recognized nonprofit organization that brings awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-against-girl bullying through their global movement, documentary film, in-school assemblies and educational curriculums. https://www.kindcampaign.com/about/
Julianna, may you rest in eternal peace. You will forever be missed.
