in Steph's memory - S.O.C.K.S.

“Do what I can, do it well, willingly, to learn something new… and if possible, do it to make someone else’s life better.” – Stephanie Muldrow
As Marshall College Alumni, former Orientation Leaders, UCSD students, friends, and colleagues of Stephanie, we all know that she lived and breathed this mantra. She embodied diversity, equity, and inclusion in a way that no one else did. She was there to uplift others even while enduring difficult and trying challenges in her personal life. Stephanie started the S.O.C.K.S. project (Supporting Others Creates Kindred Spirits) after speaking with several shelters and assessing their immediate needs. She raised over 1300 socks in 2017, and her goal was to raise 3600 in 2018.
Since Stephanie never got to upload her final count for 2018, we thought with the help of loving friends, we could make a donation in her namel! UC San Diego’s Basic Needs Hub is creating a community closet. Knowing her passion for that cause and her years of impact on students, the funds raised here will go as one big donation to the Triton Food Pantry to boost the fledgling program, to be newly renamed “Steph’s Closet.” Steph’s Closet will be a space for students who are in need to access items such as clothing for interviews, and, well, SOCKS!
And in the words of Steph…
"Each person has the ability to affect change if they are sincere and passionate about making something happen. I originally wanted to just work to be kinder and more compassionate to as many people as I could day in and day out. I have discovered that we never really know what people are managing in their everyday life just to make ends meet; keep their family safe, clothed, fed, healthy, nor what types of obstacles large and small can weigh their lives down and hinder their focus on their ultimate goal(s). I wanted to do things that continue to lift the spirits of others and remind them that what is done from the heart makes a difference."
We are lucky beyond measure to have these words and Steph’s Mantra to live by. Let’s do as Steph would do, and make something happen! Friends, OL’s, Alumni, former staff- we invite you to make a donation to honor Stephanie Muldrow and her commitment to her students, her family, and the various communities that she impacted.
The initial goal is $1000, and we’re confident we can get 100 of us to donate $10 a piece. Think of it as a 3-pack of socks. Or maybe you want to give a 8-pack ($25). Or maybe the bulk Costco family pack for $100. Whatever the amount, know that you’re helping to pay it forward.
This page is being used to pool funds for one large donation to start Steph's Closet. There are other ways you can give, especially for those wanting documentation for tax credit. To give by credit/debit card, use https://espi.ucsd.edu/make-a-gift?id=8506de78-588f-4d00-ac7d-f22f410eb2a5 For cash or check, coordinate with Justin Glover, [email redacted] to get gift receipts. In both cases make sure you reference "Steph's Closet" to direct the funds to this memorial campaign.
UPDATE: Between this gofundme and the direct giving page, this campaign is already over $2000. This gofundme campaign will remain open until UC San Diego/Thurgood Marshall College's Memorial Service for Stephanie Muldrow, scheduled for October 19th, 3-6p at the UCSD Faculty Club. We are hoping to be able to report the success of the fundraising and your efforts to establish Steph's Closet on campus. The reach goal is $5,000, to give this new resource a great start.
