Indonesia Education Project

Hello everyone, my name is Peris Gultom and I am a 19-year old student from Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. Currently, I am graduating from Bogor Vocational School of Chemical Analyst. For three and a half years I have been volunteering for an educational community called ‘Terminal Hujan’ in my hometown of Bogor. The community focuses on educating socially disadvantaged children of a district of Bogor called ‘Terminal Baranangsiang’. I have focused on this area because this is one of the poorest areas in Bogor city. I am teaching these children on elementary school, junior high school, or senior high school level subjects like English, Indonesian language, Math, and Science every Sunday from 9-12 a.m.

We at ‘Terminal Hujan’ believe that every human being has the right of education. Due to the uneven distribution of education, there are many children on this planet who still don’t have an access to educational facilities, not only in rural areas but also in big cities like Bogor. Even though there is a sufficient amount of schools in the area of Bogor, a lot of people can’t afford school fees for their children, especially in districts like ‘Terminal Baranangsiang’. As the government is not changing this situation for the better, we at ‘Terminal Hujan’ decided to change the situation by ourselves and help those children without access to education.

When I talk with the children at Termina Hujan about the future, I can tell that they are highly motivated to follow their dreams. Nevertheless, they feel small sometimes. For them, their difficult financial and social situation feels like a barrier to a better future.

This is the reason why the team at Terminal Hujan tries to provide an access to education in order to set the foundation of a better life in the future. We like to motivate them by telling that they can become anyone they want, personally and professionally.

With my initiative I want to raise funds to pay school fees for one year for 13 children of our project, including books and the support of learning facilities in Terminal Hujan such as a projector. As the government doesn’t cover school fees on senior high school level, it is hard for children at instead of in this age to visit schools, especially for children from low income families. Moreover, our classes every Sunday cannot impart the same amount of knowledge than a proper school would, especially on a senior high school level. At Terminal Hujan, there are 13 children, who are old enough and willing to go to senior high school. Hence, we would like to support them by paying their school fees for one year. Within this year we will also use a part of the money to educate their mothers with another project of ours called “Community Development”. This project does not only develop their skills of producing food or handcrafted goods, it also teaches the mothers the basics in marketing, sales and other fields of business development. We are convinced that after a year, the mothers are able to gain additional income with their small businesses, which will be used to finance school fees for their children sustainably and to support the everyday life of the families.
