On Thursday 2nd of May, our dog Jasper fell very ill with anaemia, he was later diagnosed with an autoimmune problem where his immune system was destroying his own red blood cells, he spent the next several days on IV fluids fighting for his life in the intensive care unit where he received a blood transfusion and various medicines to try and keep him alive. Normally an athletic, bouncy, happy boy, he was so weak he was unable to stand. By the following Wednesday the medication had finally started to kick in and his body had stopped destroying his red blood cells as much and he had started to stabilise, as the vet said, 'we are not winning yet, but we are not losing either'. he was still losing weight and the vet was concerned that he wasn't eating with them , He's a fussy eater at the best of times and after being in there for nearly a week he had barely eaten more than a handful of chicken bits so the vets wanted to trial him at home for a day to see if he was happier and to get him eating more.
After being at home for a day and seeming to eat a little more and have a bit more energy we went back the next day for a further blood test to check his levels to find that they had gone up a tiny bit and his bone marrow was producing new red blood cells , which is a step in the right direction, although he has a high risk of a blood clot at any given moment, his eating and energy are slowly picking up a little bit each day.
He is on 4 types of medication that have to be administered 5 times a day, and practically constantly monitored (even through the night). We are so lucky and greatful that he is doing better than he was, but along with a 5.5k vet bill, he is having regular appointments and medication that is worth almost £1000 for the month.
He has just enjoyed his tenth birthday, and hopefully has many more healthy years ahead of him.
His father, Daxter, has been diagnosed with (unrelated) cushings disease this year, and with paying for two vet bills, we are financially struggling, even with them both insured.
Please help us and donate anything you can to help Jasper. We are desperate.
Thank you
