Merry Christmas City of Massillon!
The city of Massillon, Ohio plans to build a splash park and new playground at the North Reservoir Park. What a gift to the community! Can’t you see families and children playing in the splashes of cool water on hot summer days?
The park will be named after Jake Roberson. “The Jake Roberson Memorial Park.”
Jake grew up in Massillon attending Smith, Longfellow and WHS class of ‘05. He was an outstanding student and athlete. You may remember him atop the orange fire truck at the football games wearing Viking horns!
Jake was a diver for WHS and then at Drexel university. He continued diving for entertainment at Sea World, Six Flags, and for entertainment companies in China and Japan. He loved the water and performing for children. Jakes love of water, sense of fun, joy of children, adventurous play and his appreciation for his hometown inspired the naming of the park.
Jake died February 2017 as a result of his mental illness, he was 30 years old. Jake suffered from bipolar disorder which he developed at age 25. He had many good/productive months on his medication, followed by many relapses when he failed to take his medications. This led to bouts psychosis, dangerous thinking and harfmul behavior.
It is the hope of the park to raise awareness about mental illness as well as providing a safe, fun, healthy, FREE place to play and enjoy family and friends.
Bipolar disorder can be treated and needs to be taken seriously, it can also be deadly. Please trust your gut feelings if someone you know is not “acting” themselves. Be their advocate and lead them to help, you could be their lifeline.
This is a great and generous honor that has been bestowed upon Jake’s memory. His family is overjoyed and humbled by this memorial.
We thank you -Phil, Sharon, Ruth, Kevin, Joan & baby Grace.
Merry Christmas and may 2019 be a very good year to all.
