Jason’s Fight Against Sarcoma

Jason has been diagnosed with intermediate stage (3B) of Retroperitoneal Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma Cancer. Sarcoma is a rare cancer (1% of all cancers) with many types, variations and complexities. In February, a large conglomerate tumor was found in his abdomen cavity which is affecting his kidney, spleen, pancreas, colon, aorta and psoas muscle. The best way to treat sarcoma is with surgery. However, Kaiser ruled him inoperable and was told chemotherapy was his only option in the hopes the tumor would shrink and make surgery a viable option. For the past 12 weeks, Jason went thru 4 rounds of intense AIM chemotherapy. Both of his CT scans showed that the tumor grew slightly and that chemotherapy had very little effect. Dr. William Tseng at Keck Medicine at USC is a sarcoma specialist and has dedicated his entire career to fight this very challenging and rare cancer. Dr. Tseng is willing and able to do the surgery and currently he is scheduled for July 2nd. However, Kaiser continues to deny the referral to USC and is simply dragging their feet. They are continuing the fight with Kaiser, but at the end of the day, there just isn’t time to wait. Jason has one chance at this surgery and Dr. Tseng is the most qualified person to handle it. Monies donated to the Pike Family will go strictly to medical costs, lodging, food and other essentials needed during his hospital stay and recovery following.
