Above is a photo of Jay a day or two before he was struck behind by a driver while riding his bike in Colorado.
Personal Connection:
I met Jay around one week ago at a bicycle hostel in Hindman, KY. We met because we are both traveling on the Transamerica Bicycle Trail. I spent about 6 hours with him in total, and I found out that he is originally from New Zealand and had lived in Great Britain for a number of years. I also found out that Jay was trying to cycle a significant number of miles everyday (over 100) in order to make it to Los Angeles, CA to meet his girlfriend.
In the short time that I was able to spend with Jay, it became abundantly clear to me that he is a compassionate and kind individual.
A Life Changing Moment:
Today, June 5th 2017, I found out that Jay had made it all the way out to Colorado before being hit from behind by a vehicle. I found out this information through Instagram, as he had posted a picture of himself severely injured and in a neck brace. It turns out he has suffered major injuries from this incident, including broken ribs, broken vertebrae, a punctured lung, and a brain bleed.
While riding across Kansas today and reading the yellow signs on the side of the road that say "leave three feet for cyclists when passing", a thought came into my head. I have decided to create this gofundme in order to offset some of the medical expenses that will accrue due to this incident. I thought it was the least I could do for a fellow cyclist.
Please Donate To Offset Jay's Medical Expenses:
Any amount will help, and 100 percent of the funds raised will go directly to Jay to help offset medical expenses and for travel expenses for his family to visit him in stateside, as they are locate in New Zealand and Great Britain.
Other Ways To Help:
Please send positive energy and prayers to Jay in his time of need, and please donate if you are able. If you are able to share this gofundme on your facebook page, that would be helpful as well if you feel so inclined to do so.
This situation is fairly urgent, as Jay remains in critical care.
Sincerely Yours,
