Supporting Jim Smith

(This campaign is being conducted by a committee of community members chaired by Brian Duplessis)

Jim Smith has been a dedicated employee of the Fredericton Food Bank/Greener Village for 24 years. He has served the community with a willing heart to help those in need.

Jim recently suffered a stroke and has been in the hospital since May 22nd. His progress is slow but sure. He has a long road of recovery to face but this is not the only challenge.

Added to the stress of being ill and his wife Jeanne having to find and relocate to a ground floor, wheelchair accessible apartment, his wages have been cut off.

In addition to his modestly paid regular hours, Jim worked countless unpaid hours to help the most vulnerable in our community fulfilling what he believes is one of our most basic human responsibilities, making sure no one goes hungry.

But after 24 years of dedicated service, the new management of the Fredericton Food Bank/Greener Village, now under the full control of the Fredericton Seventh-day Adventist Church has made the decision to remove Jim from the payroll, placing him on medical Employment Insurance for 15 weeks which means he will receive only $314 a week. Two weeks of EI will not even cover his rent.

Instead of waiting four months until his wife would qualify for her OAS and Guaranteed Annual Income, the Church has guaranteed that Jim and his wife Jeanne could become clients of the Food Bank before the end of next month.

As he tries to recover, Jim is very concerned about Jeanne who is carrying the burden of trying to figure all of this out while she herself has medical challenges.

A small group of volunteers and donors have set-up this fundraiser for Jim to share that burden and lift it from his shoulders. If we can raise $5,000 in the next few weeks, the pressure will be eased.

Please donate any amount that you feel you can share to help Jim and Jeanne. No amount is too small and will be greatly appreciated.

Please also share this information with as many people as possible.

Thank-you on behalf of Jim and Jeanne!!!
