Justice for Devan

On May 2nd, 2015 our sweet Devan was taken from us in a shocking way. My name is Jesse Stamm and I am writing this to help Devan's family raise the funds needed to help find answers as to why Devan is no longer with us. I met Devan in Girdwood, AK when she began to work for me and later became my roommate. Devan was a beautiful young woman, a daughter, a sister, an auntie and a friend to all she met. At just 29 years old, Devan was found unresponsive at her home in the Capital Hill area of Seattle, Washington. The circumstances of her death and the manner in which she was found are very suspicious and disturbing. Homicide has not been ruled out as the cause of death but instead her death has been found to be undetermined. There are many details that we cannot release to public at this time though please know that there is strong physical evidence that could prove that Devan did not pass away in any natural or accidental way. We are fast approaching the 1 year anniversary of her passing and there have been no arrests made.

Devan had recently moved to Seattle for what was to be a temporary situation and planned on returning to Alaska where her sense of adventure had called her 6 years ago. As a kid Dev grew up in Wisconsin and Florida. Devan had BIG love when she loved and she fell in love with something every single day: dogs, rainbows, thunderstorms, mud puddles, the Northern Lights and of course her family and friends.  Her passing was felt far and wide by the hundreds and hundreds of people that were blessed to have known Ms. Devan Chanel Schmidt.

Devan’s laughter was so memorable that if you knew her and are reading this, you can hear her laughing now and you’re smiling. You couldn’t help but to love Devan, even if you tried not to. That’s just how she was; a light so bright that you were drawn to her until you were hooked just waiting to see what would happen next! Dev has this fun and quirky sense of humor so that even if you didn’t quite get the joke you laughed along because of her infectious laughter.

We miss her. Every single day. None of this makes any sense because people aren’t supposed to die like Devan did. One day she was just gone and left behind were broken hearts and far too many questions that have been left unanswered.  While Devan’s bright light shines on the emptiness and loneliness in the hearts of those that loved her stays like an unwelcomed stranger.

You’ve seen Dateline, CSI and Lifetime movies but you never, in a million years, think that your loved one will be the victim of a violent crime. You get the sense that the police do all of the investigating and things will just work themselves out.  What you find out when this nightmare happens to your family is that (without a confession) you need an attorney, second opinions and money to pay for these things so that you can find justice.

What we are asking for is for your donations to help cover the cost of the independent medical examiner and legal services so that we can finally have enough evidence to move forward with a warrant for an arrest. Any amount that you could spare is so greatly appreciated and we will keep you updated as often as possible.  Prayers and positive thoughts are also appreciated as Devan’s family struggles through this heart-wrenching time. Donations will go to Devan's sister, Lia Kendall and will pay for the second medical examiner, an attorney to help oversee all of the evidence and possible travel expenses from Florida (Lia lives in Florida) to Seattle. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
