Bill's Road to Recovery
On September 30th, 2016, my husband Bill was involved in a life-changing, five vehicle accident coming home from work.
Bill suffered a severe spinal cord injury with a fracture to the C2, bleeding in the spine from the C1 to the C4 and a severe contusion from the C2 thru the C4. On October 1st, Bill had emergency surgery to stop the bleeding and have plates and screws placed to stabilize the neck from further injury. Unfortunately, the injuries sustained from the accident resulted in Bill being paralyzed from his neck down.
Five days following surgery, Bill took a turn for the worse, and was put on life support. He spent 19 days in Intensive Care at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, following the accident. On October 18th, Bill was transferred to Bethesda Hospital in St Paul, Minnesota where he was successful at weening off of the ventilator. After 33 days at Bethesda, Bill was transferred to Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to begin rehabilitation. Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute offers the most aggressive therapy for Spinal Cord Injuries in the mid west.
We are setting up this fund to help facilitate Bill coming home. There are many costs that are not covered by insurance, which means it is " Private Pay". This fund will help relieve some of the cost of moving to a wheelchair accessible home, obtaining a handicap accessible van and the purchase of voice activated items, as well as, assisting with the cost of having 24 hour Nursing / PCA's.
A Caring Bridge page has also been set up where you can follow Bill’s progress. Your thoughts, prayers and well wishes are always very welcomed.
You never think something like this will happen to you or to someone you love. Everyday I took for granted that Bill would walk in the door at the end of the day, until the day he didn't. In just a moment, our lives were forever changed. Bill and I both look forward to the day he can come home again and we can begin to find our new "normal".
Thank you for taking your time to read Bill's story and thank you for your support. It means everything to Bill, myself and our family.
