Kara Tepe Refugee Camp Fundraiser
Donation protected
Please join us in showing support for the refugees who are currently confined--many for a year or more--on the Kara Tepe Family Refugee Camp in Lesvos, Greece.
Our names are Lauren Cooley and Alice Fischetti, and we are two graduate students living in Florence, Italy who will be traveling to Lesvos in May to work with a Dutch organization called Because We Carry (BWC). BWC provides breakfast every morning for about 1,100 refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other conflict-stricken nations. After breakfast distribution, we offer play hour for the children in the camp, including yoga activities, loom bracelet-making, drawing, hula hooping, and soccer, to name a few. As these children unfortunately do not attend formal schooling, BWC's play hour is an important source of structure that provides children with an opportunity to interact with adults outside of their immediate family members.
BWC sponsors additional programs for the camp's residents each afternoon. These often focus on health and hygiene. For example, in the past we have distributed sunblock and offered lice prevention tutorials. An essential component of BWC's work involves keeping Kara Tepe's residents joyful and providing some normalcy for those whose lives have been devastatingly turned upside down. We throw dance parties, bake and distribute cookies, organize chess games, and screen movies for the children.
Your contribution will directly impact the quality of life of these 1,100 families who have had to put their lives on hold while they wait to complete the bureaucratic processes that they hope will eventually grant them asylum status in Europe. Each euro counts. One euro is enough to pay for one breakfast. With twenty euro, you can sponsor breakfast for twenty people. 100% of your donation will go directly to the cause of purchasing food and supplies for Kara Tepe refugees. Lauren and Alice are privately funding their own travel and boarding costs.
Thank you so much for your generosity.
A little more about us:
Lauren has previously volunteered with BWC. She recently gave a presentation about the situation on Lesvos and her experience working with refugees at a conference titled "Borders, Walls, and Boundaries: The Future of European Integration," held at Syracuse University in Florence. Please visit Lauren's blog to read the essays she wrote following her stay at Kara Tepe.
Alice volunteered as an Italian language teacher for immigrants seeking asylum in Italy through the organization Caritas Italiana. Living in Florence and working at Villa Pepi, she saw firsthand how the difficult journey of acceptance and integration is one that extends far beyond the first step of being granted asylum.
We are both dedicated to actively helping refugee communities and to raising awareness about the reality of asylum seekers' lives and humanity.
