My name is Katrina Berg and I am 21 years old. I am fundraising for a residential eating disorder treatment program in Manitoba, called Westwind.
When I has 17 years old I developed my eating disorder, and was officially diagnosed at 18 when I was forced into the hospital to seek help. Since then, I have been to treatment three times and am still struggling immensely. Unfortunately, Canada has a lack in resources and treatment waitlists are way too long. I've been quoted for a few treatment programs and unfortunately the wait time is about 6-8 months long. The fact is, I don't know if I have enough time to wait on a waitlist of such a length. I feel my body and brain shutting down more and more by the day. I am receiving outpatient support but it is simply not enough. I am currently diagnosed with OSFED (Otherwise Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder). http://nedic.ca/clinical-definitions#Pica My diagnosis is taken less seriously because it's not one of the typical ones, but that doesn't mean that the severity of my illness is any less important than someone else's. The only issue is that it is not funded by Ontario health insurance (OHIP). I have looked into grants, government funding, and other sources of income to help pay for treatment and unfortunately there was nothing achievable for the near future.
I want to live a full life and accomplish my goals and I'm beginning to get scared that it won't happen. I am currently attending full-time university to achieve a Bachelors Degree in Social Work, so that I can help other people who are suffering with the same illness that I am. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate out of any other mental illness and nobody deserves to go without support for this deadly disease. I am asking for your support because I want to have a future. My plan is to go to Manitoba to do the residential eating disorders treatment program there. I am asking for your help to get me there, so that I can live the life I want to, and to tell my story and help others who are struggling with eating disorders/other mental illnesses.
If you can't afford to donate, please share my story. I want to get the intensive treatment I desperately need, so that I can finally beat this horrendous illness. Any amount that you can donate would be greatly appreciated. I need your help to make this happen because without awareness, nothing will change. Any funds raised through this page will go towards treatment costs, with top priority being treatment at Westwind, and anything leftover being to support my outpatient efforts whilst I wait for treatment.
