“SPECTACLE” is a multi-layered interdisciplinary work from the mind of Kayla Farrish. Looking through music, scene, narrative, and imagery, the work marries dance and film.  She explores the intersections of power as a woman journeys through the sticky inevitabilities of love and relationships in our current societal and cultural state. What is a woman required to uphold?

ABOUT SPECTACLE
The first evening length production from Kayla Farrish/Decent Structures Arts merges  film with live performance in an explosion of feeling. We follow a woman in her re-examinations of sexuality, power, and trauma within society’s placement of her female body. Her wild spirit challenges expectations and processes it all. If we can see women, bodies, and people beyond objectification, perhaps we can make space to feel, and deconstruct gender roles and rape culture. There then can be healing and freedom.

Decent Structures Arts aims to hold up a mirror to the society we form and participate in, to the communities and cultures we identify ourselves with and lastly, to the tremendous and unique experiences that form us as individuals. Our guts, instincts, weakness, power, voice that we do or don’t find and our numerous attempts to related, drive me/us – I believe in the physicality of what makes us inevitably, catastrophically, hilariously, heartbreakingly and wonderfully human.

BUDGET
Usually, Kayla Farrish/Decent Structures Arts relies on the goodwill and volunteered effort on its many collaborators. “SPECTACLE” asks for a much bigger commitment of the many dancers, actors and crew involved, which deserves equitable compensation.

We’ve been successful in securing alternative funding ahead of its premiere, but now turn to our community of family, friends and fellow dance supporters to contribute to bringing our “SPECTACLE” to life.

Working  with a  large, diverse cast of collaborators, and creating through many mediums has been an incredibly relevant and special opportunity. The work was able to grow through our real experiences. I hope we can inspire others to see themselves and to eventually be heard as well.
