My name is Dre Giles and on the evening of May 26th my nephew and his mother were killed in a tragic car accident involving an 18-wheeler, that killed four people and injured many others.
We are asking for help to cover funeral expenses for these two loved ones with proceeds going to the immediate family in their time of need.
Also, because of their passion for charity and Keland's passion for martial arts, funds will be used to create the Keland & Yolanda Memorial Scholarship Fund in conjunction with Gladiators Academy of Lafayette to identify and help school-aged kids who would benefit from engaging and learning martial arts.
On a personal note, I'm not sure that the entire gravity of the situation has hit me yet. Watching Keland grow up, he was a warm, loving young man with so much promise for his future. He was witty and honest. What you saw was what you got, and he was always willing to stand up for the morals and values that he believed in. His mother was the same way, warm and supportive. In all the years I've known her I can't remember a time when there wasn't a smile on her face or when she didn't welcome me with a warm meal. Both were heavily involved in their communities, doing charity work, fundraising, toy-drives and supporting our first responders, more of which you can learn about on Keland's facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pg/The-Power-Ranger-Keland-Simmons-370329816322711/videos/. I find myself at times just staring into space unable to believe what happened.
But the family is in need and we ask for support from the community, family, friends and even strangers to help the immediate family get through this tragic event. Whatever you can give will be warmly appreciated. The memorial service is set for 11am on the 9th of June at Good Hope Baptist Church in Lafayette, Louisiana, which is why we are trying to raise funds as soon as possible.
Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers and support during this time.
